우리는 보통 죽음을 잊고 살거나 애써 모른척하기도 한다. 나는 죽음에 관해 자주, 그리고 많은 생각을 하는데, 죽는 것이 아닌 건강하게 오래 살고자 하는 것에 관한 고민이다. 이것은 인간의 가장 근본적이고도 본능적으로 깊숙이 박혀있는 불로장생(不老長生), 무병장수(無病長壽)에 관한 욕망(慾望)이기도 하다.
예로부터 우리 그림 중 행복하고 건강하게 오래 살기를 바라는 마음으로 자연과 동식물을 그리던 장생도(長生圖)가 있다. 장생도는 보통 십장생이라고 불리는 요소들이 있는데 해, 물, 산, 구름, 돌, 소나무, 불로초, 대나무, 학, 사슴, 거북이 등 불멸의 존재라 여겨지던 자연의 요소들과 수명이 길다고 알려진 동식물들이 해당이 되고 하늘에서 내려준 과일이라고 알려진 복숭아도 포함된다.
그림을 통해 본능적 욕망인 장수와 무병을 담은 장생도와 함께 등장하는 또 다른 주인공은 한국의 천연기념물인 수달이다. 천연기념물 제330호, 멸종 위기 야생 생물 1종으로 지정되어있는 한국 수달은 고령화와 인구감소로 사라지고 있는 우리 인간일 수도 있다. 인간과 같은 운명을 지닌 수달을 통해 죽음과 멸종이 아닌 건강하게 오래 살고자 하는 욕망을 담고, 커피나 차, 디저트, 고가의 그릇 등 물건에 대한 욕심과 보여주기에 진심인 인간 내면의 다소 세속적인 욕망도 표현한다.
과거와 현대의 요소들을 조합하여 테이블 위에 작은 초현실 세상을 만들어 옛 선조들은 물론 현대인들에게까지 이어지는 본능적인 욕망들을 표현하고자 한다.
We usually forget about death or try to ignore it. I often and often think a lot about death, but it's not about dying, but about living a healthy long life. This is also the desire to live a healthy long life, which is deeply embedded in humans' most fundamental and instinctive.
Among our paintings since ancient times, there is Jangsaengdo, which used to paint nature and plants in hopes of living a happy and healthy long life. Jangsaengdo has elements commonly called Jangsaeng, which include elements of nature that were considered immortal, such as the sun, water, mountains, clouds, stones, pine trees, elixir plant, bamboo, cranes, deer, and turtles, and peaches known as fruits from the sky.
Another protagonist who appears through the painting along with Jang Saeng-do, which contains the instinctive desires of longevity and disease-free life, is an otter, a natural monument in Korea. Designated as Natural Monument No. 330 and one endangered wild species, the Korean otter may be a human being that is disappearing due to aging and population decline. Through otters with the same fate as humans, it contains the desire to live a long and healthy life, not death and extinction, and also expresses the human's desire for goods such as coffee, tea, desserts, and expensive bowls, and a rather secular desire within the human being who is sincere in showing them.
By combining the elements of the past and the present, we want to create a small surreal world on the table to express the instinctive desires that extend not only to our ancestors but also to modern people.
